BLOOM
A lamp that uses UV rays to sanitise and disinfect the objects placed inside it.
Brief
Year 2, Semester 1
To design a product inspired by nature and demonstrate an understanding of simple gear and motor technologies.
Biomimicry
- Biomimicry- Bio(life) + mimikos(imitation)
- Imitation of elements from nature for the purpose of solving problems.
- It changes our lens on the world and helps us design generously.
- The goal of biomimicry is to create products that solve our greatest design challenges sustainably and in solidarity with all life on earth.
Ideation
- Due to Covid 19, we have started sanitizing each and every item that is used by us regularly.
- I wanted to design something that would sanitize the products but at the same, look aesthetically pleasing.

- Nature's inspiration - blossoming of a flower.
- Design inspiration - Adenium Flower

Mechanism
Movement5 of petals is created by pushrods.
Petals are connected to pushrods through a circular base.
Pushrods are controlled by movement of a servo and the servo movement is tuned up with Arduino.
The servo motor, ardunio and touch sensors is at thr base of the light.
SENSORS
- For this project, I thought of using the TTP223 touch sensor which creates a capacitive touchpad.
- When the button is touched, it would trigger the sensor and tell Arduino to open the blossom.
- The sensor will also be connected to a 555 timer IC.
CMF
COLOUR
Colour as we know it today, has an important part in the development stage of a product, here I have used darker colours as they are much better at absorbing UV rays.
MATERIAL
Material comes in a range of options to choose from textiles, leathers, plastics etc. The use of materials influence a products' performance, functionality and visual appeal. Here I have used plastic as it is UV resistant.
FINISH
Surface finish is a treatment or coating applied to a product adding value to the material and enhancing its surface. Here, I have used a reflective surface for the interiors as it sends UV light all over the exterior of objects placed inside the lamp resulting in 360 sterlization.
